Another School Year

Well, another school year has passed and we’re excited about the summer.   Not only is it time for more outdoor fun, but we’re also departing this weekend for 10 days of fun on the East Coast. We’re looking forward to Sarah’s wedding and seeing family.

Our summer plans are stacking up and we’re looking forward to all sorts of fun adventures.  We hope to see many of you soon.

Before diving into the summer we thought we’d share a few photos from our last few weeks of school.

Spring Music Concert

Check out that track suit.

Ready to rumble.

Will gets a slow start at the 200M.

The others appear to have it.

But Will takes first.

Team Tomeo.

Emma already misses her teacher.

Though he’s not showing it, Will loves his teacher.

First Year of Hockey

It’s been  a few weeks now since the rink melted out and I’ve been meaning to post this collection of our winter hockey memorabilia.  Hockey season may be over for us, but the NHL playoffs are going strong and Will & I are already planning to set up a puck shooting area in the driveway this summer.

Will really took to hockey this year.  His older friends were all the motivation he needed.  Will’s IP hockey teammates were a tough bunch of kids – we had some cold and windy practices.

With Buddy, Addison

Skating has also been fun to do with friends.

Will really enjoys skating and he’s got nice form.   Several of the older kids in Healy hockey have complemented him on his skating skills.  We’re happy to nurture this interest as long as he continues to love it.  The backyard rink was a real hoot to have and thinking is already underway for making next years rink even  better.

Next year Will moves up to a competitive team and he’ll be one of the youngest players on the team.  It should be interesting and fun.  He’s played a few times at the adult Deneki Lakes hockey games and it is hilarious to seem him out there skating around, he can literally skate through some people’s legs.

Below is an album of the whole winter on skates.

Okay, I guess we’re almost ready for summer.
Street hockey anyone?

Eggs, Bunnies and Easter

This morning, after reading about the Resurrection we talked about where this story of the easter bunny & easter eggs might have come from.  It was agreed that eggs are a good symbol for new life. And Emma correctly guess that because bunnies produce a lot of babies that they also symbolized springtime.

To expand on the ‘hunt’ Martha created an egg scavenger hunt for the kids this morning.  It was very fun.

Happy Easter and Happy Spring to all!!

p.s. Bunnies don’t really lay eggs, DUCKS do!

Here are some more photos from the day.

Mushing in the Blood

It was a tough choice to sell off our team of sled dogs six years ago.  We loved training dogs and the rewards that came with it. Exploring the Alaska Range in such a peaceful and traditional manner is incomparable.

Reluctant to give up completely, we kept our mushing gear and doghouses so that we could get back into dogs when we had more time or for borrowing dog teams and playing ‘relief mushers’ for short periods of time.

This January we cared for eight dogs while some musher friends were out of state. Even though it was the coldest January since 1933, we still got out on the trails a bit. And Emma took her love of animals (all animals, except spiders & snakes) to a new level. She went mushing several times, even mushing the team while David rode inside the sled basket.  She’s got mushing in her blood.

Below is a unique video that a friend shot on one of the rare warm days.  We had a camera attached to the sled and had another on a remote control helicopter.

Enjoy.

March is for Skiing

Spring break in mid-March brings sunny and warmer weather, perfect for skiing.

We made the most of spring break.
A ski clinic with a gang of kids at the school got spring break off to an excellent start. We then drove down to Talkeenta for the Oosik Ski Classic  – Martha skied the 25k race and the rest of the gang did the 3k ski race.  Emma had a very social time, Will learned the story of the tortoise that passed the hare (his sister), and Martha cruised through her 25 kilometers with ease.

That wasn’t enough skiing for us, so we headed down to Girdwood and the Alyeska Ski Resort for some downhill skiing.  The kids did great!  While Emma developed good ski control, Will liked being in control of his need for speed.  After several days on the slopes we came home to host an end-of-ski-season party with a group of kids over for a ski tour and weenie roasting on an open fire.  Last night we trekked out to a remote cabin for a peaceful overnighter  – Martha skied and the rest of us had fun with the snowmachine ride.

It was a great break!

Old boy turns 14

Carlo dog reached another milestone, turning 14 years old this week. The kids and Martha prepared him a special treat, one that any good dog would love…

Emma also made him a gift!

The Big Book of Dogs (no cats allowed)

And Will’s gift for Carlo was a good belly rub!

A Whirl of Winter Fun

The start of 2012 has been a whirlwind of fun for the Tomeos.  We’ve been taking advantage of every presented to us.  Here is a little pictorial tour of the past two months.

David's youth ski program acquired a trail groomer. It makes for nice trails!

In January we cared for a team of sled dogs.

And Emma became a genuine musher.

Running dogs, is always special.

Cold weather kept us indoors a bit, but still active.

For Will's 6th birthday he had a Hockey Party - on the backyard rink.

Will, our little man.

With a snowmachine David expanded his range even more this winter.

Martha organized another Mom's Ski Trip.

Martha leads the Brownies on ice.

One productive Brownie.

Emma wins her third blue ribbon with a project on Solar Energy Homes. She won a bonus prize from our local utility company.

Will impressed us and the judges with his blue ribbon winning Science Fair Project on mountain formations. Will also won a bonus prize as the Judges choice for the best display.

The Fairbanks Ice Carving Park, a mix of fun and art.

Parents can have fun too.
